Benjamin Bratt is an American actor and producer. Bratt was born in San Francisco, California, on December 16, 1963, as the third of five children to Eldy, a nurse and political activist, and Peter Bratt Sr., a sheet metal worker.

His mother is of Quechua descent and was born in Lima, Peru. She immigrated to the United States with her family when she was 14 years old.

Benjamin Bratt’s father is a German-English immigrant from the United States. George, Bratt’s paternal grandfather, was a Broadway actor.

Benjamin Bratt’s mother, an activist for Native American rights, took Bratt (age 6) and her other children to the 1969 Native American occupation of Alcatraz.

It was led by young people from San Francisco and drew participants from all over the country to raise national awareness of Native American issues.

Benjamin Bratt has been following in his mother’s footsteps. Throughout his career, Bratt has been an outspoken supporter of the American Indian Movement, advocating for causes such as the Tribal Athletics Program, the United Indian Nations, and the American Indian College Fund.

He also provided narration for the 2009 PBS miniseries “We Shall Remain,” which was about Native American communities.
